Introduced to the racing calendar in 2003, the two-and-a-quarter-mile Premier Kelso Novices' Hurdle is a Grade 2 event run at the Borders track in early March and is a decent betting heat, in which those betting on the favourite have a fine record of success.
The timing of the race makes it an ideal stepping stone to a tilt at one of the novice features at the Cheltenham Festival and consequently those compiling ante-post odds betting lists will be taking notice of any significant performances, with one eye on the Triumph Hurdle or the Supreme Novices Hurdle.
Trainer Howard Johnson has won two of the four renewals of this event, on both occasions his representatives being the subject of significant bets and being sent off favourite at the head of the market.
In 2007, Alistair Charlton's decent sort Bywell Beau was backed down to odds of 11/8 favouritism having been the subject of serious betting interest before winning by a wide margin.
