John Fahy celebrates his Cambridgeshire win aboard Prince of Johanne
Prince of Johanne sprung a surprise (Betfair SP of [58.31]) as he landed the Cambridgeshire Handicap at Newmarket on Saturday...
The gelding had been proving consistent and had won twice earlier in the year, but his trainer Tom Tate had gone 71 days without a winner and few could have predicted that Prince of Johanne would land the historic Newmarket handicap.
The field initially raced in two groups but converged towards the stand side as things took shape, at which point Prince of Johanne's rider, 3 lb claimer John Fahy, who finished second in last year's race on Steele Tango, asked the grey to set sail for home.
Although some have questioned him in the past, Prince of Johannes found plenty as he met the rising ground, beating Stevie Thunder, Proponent and the evergreen Nanton.
Favourite Man of Action was unplaced in a race where many had excuses, while Jeremy Noseda's ante-post favourite Dare to Dance was pulled out on the morning of the race due to the ground.
