A three-mile event run at Newbury's December fixture, the Mandarin Handicap Chase is a competitive event run in memory of one of the great steeplechasers of the 1960's, who was regularly partnered by the legendary Fred Winter.
The race has proved a poor event for those betting on the favourite in the last decade with no market leader having obliged during the period and average odds of almost 8/1 being returned for the winner.
Normally run on testing ground, the 'Mandarin' is an event that suits horses who stay beyond the race distance of three miles and who have stamina in abundance. A particularly impressive performance could have some minor effect on the ante-post odds betting lists for the major staying handicap chases later in the season, but overall the race has not really proven itself as one to follow for the betting public.
