This established Cheltenham Gold Cup trial, run over three miles, one and a half furlongs, rarely attracts more than five or six runners, but always proves a fascinating betting contest on the day and often a significant pointer to the strengths or frailties of those populating the ante-post odds betting list.
A Grade 2 contest, the race has proved something of a graveyard for those betting on the favourite in recent years (despite the odds) with no market leader having won since Cyfor Malta in 1999 at odds of 10/11.
The 2007 winner Exotic Dancer won at odds of 6/1, despite having already bagged two major handicaps at the track earlier in the season and then went on to run a blinder to be second to Kauto Star in the Gold Cup itself.
The testing nature of the Cheltenham track means that only horses who generally stay at least the trip and preferably further, should be considered when planning a bet for this race, regardless of the odds on offer in the betting ring. An ability to handle testing ground is also a significant asset.
