Hayley Turner celebrates after her July Cup win on Dream Ahead

"Turner...is just the second female jockey to win a Group 1 in Britain, after Alex Greaves dead-heated on Ya Malak in the Nunthorpe 14 years earlier."

Hayley Turner lands her first Group 1 victory as Timeform top-rated Dream Ahead wins the July Cup at Newmarket...

Aussie raider Star Witness went off favourite, but it was David Simcock's Dream Ahead (Betfair SP [8.0]) and Hayley Turner who stole the show.

Turner, who got the ride on Dream Ahead because regular jockey William Buick was required to ride Beachfire at York for his boss John Gosden, is just the second female jockey to win a Group 1 in Britain, after Alex Greaves dead-heated on Ya Malak in the Nunthorpe 14 years earlier.

It wasn't all plain sailing, though, as Turner was briefly stuck in a pocket on the rail aboard Dream Ahead, but once they were out it was game over, powering up the hill to score with something in hand.

Dream Ahead was on something of a retrieval mission, having twice flopped since his Middle Park romp last year, but he showed all his ability remains intact and could now dominate the sprint division, starting with the Haydock Sprint Cup.

Earlier on the Newmarket card, Barry McHugh guided Richard Fahey's Brae Hill (BSP [13.66]) to victory in the Bunbury Cup having elected to do it all on his own on the stand-side.

Over at York, apprentice Adam Beschizza gained a career landmark success on Green Destiny (BSP [7.6]) in the John Smith's Cup at York. The William Haggas-trained colt, who had disappointed in the Wolferton Handicap at Royal Ascot the time before, showed himself the smart performer he had previously looked, sweeping down the outside to win from Sir Michael Stoute's Modun.
