Andrew Hughes gives us the lowdown on what we can look forward to in the world of racing this week.
Fairyhouse
3:25 Belgrave Stakes
Two good meetings in Ireland today and this six furlong Listed affair is the pick of the Fairyhouse card. Though we can expect a small field, it is likely to feature Jim Bolger's busy and versatile horse Three Rocks who has been campaigned at various distances in a hectic campaign and beat another of today's possible rivals; the Aidan O'Brien trained Georgebernardshaw, in a similar race last Saturday.
Tipperary
3:45 Grimes Hurdle
A Grade Three hurdle over two miles, this features some interesting young hurdlers and is also likely to include former Supreme Novices Hurdle winner Ebaziyan as trainer Willie Mullins makes yet another attempt to get the grey's career back on track.
Thursday July 23
Leopardstown
6:30 Tyros Stakes
Upgraded to Group Three status a couple of years back, this is a seven furlong contest for two-year-olds with a fine recent record, being won by Teofilio, New Approach and Rip Van Winkle in the last three years. Jim Bolger has saddled the winner of this eight times so any runner out of Glebe House should be treated with respect.
8:00 Meld Stakes
Another Group Three, this time over ten furlongs, that is likely to attract a number of lesser middle distance contenders, some of which have already had a tilt at a Classic or two, as well as the odd late developer being upped in class.
Sandown
3:20 Weatherbys Bloodstock Insurance Star Stakes
A Listed race for two year olds that is likely to feature some promising and impeccably well-bred youngsters.
Friday July 24
Ascot
3:50 Valiant Stakes
The best race of the opening day of the King George and Queen Elizabeth meeting, this is a Listed contest for fillies and mares run around the old mile. Expect a decent sized field of mixed ability in which it can be profitable to identify three-year-olds with untapped potential
4:25 Brown Jack Stakes
A gruelling event, this Class Two handicap is run over a stamina-draining two miles and should feature some horses being aimed at the Ebor.
Saturday July 25
Ascot
2:00 Winkfield Stakes
The second race of the day is a Listed contest for two year olds that is often worth watching as a source of potential equine stars.
2:40 Princess Margaret Stakes
A Group Three race for two-year-old fillies, run over six furlongs, that has a strong tradition of throwing up subsequent Pattern winners.
3:15 Emirates NBD Cup
A fiercely competitive Heritage Handicap for three-year-olds, run over a mile, in which the ability to fully stay the distance is an essential quality.
3:50 Abu Dhabi International Stakes
Handicap lovers will relish this contest, a huge-field seven-furlong cavalry charge that always generate plenty of betting action. With fields in the high twenties, luck in-running will play a part and punters should study carefully the form of races such as the Buckingham Palace Stakes and the Victoria and Bunbury Cups
4:25 King George V and Queen Elizabeth Stakes
One of the highlights of the summer, the King George and Queen Elizabeth Stakes not maybe held in as high regard as formerly but is a high class race nontheless. Over a demanding mile and a half, some of the best of the classic generation meet their elders in what is sure to be a frenetic betting event and a great spectacle. With Sea The Stars swerving the race, the current antepost favourite is the Eclipse third, Conduit at [3.05] a horse who will be better suited by the extra distance. Fellow Sir Michael Stoute inmate Tartan Bearer [5.9] is next best according to the market.
York
3:10 Sky Bet York Stakes
Not to be outdone, York holds a good quality card on Saturday, headed by this high class Group Two introduced a few years ago to replace the Scottish Derby. You can expect some really top class middle distance types to take on the ten furlongs here for a decent prize.
3:45 Sky Bet Dash
This a fiendishly difficult but high quality Heritage Handicap contest, run over six furlongs and sure to feature a packed field for punters to scrutinise.
