As its name suggests, the Grade 2 Haydock Champion Hurdle Trial, usually a hot betting heat, is a race that has often been expected to provide the betting public with pointers as to the destiny of the Champion Hurdle itself at Cheltenham some two months later, but has a dismal record of providing the winner.

In the last 20 years only the mare Flakey Dove has gone on from Haydock to land the hurdling crown. Many bets on ante-post betting slips have fallen by the wayside after seemingly impressive trial performances resulted in odds tumbling and large bets being wagered.

Against all the odds, no current jockey has won the race more than once, but the race is clearly one for those betting on the market principals - three favourites and two second favourites having scored in the last six years, and most of these winners have been the subject of serious bets that have caused more than a ripple in the on and off-course betting markets.
