Raised three years ago to Grade 3 status, the Greatwood Handicap Hurdle is a strong betting heat that normally impacts on the ante-post odds betting market for the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham, the following March.

Run at Cheltenham's November fixture over an extended two miles, the event attracts top class handicappers and graded hurdlers, but its overall effect on the Champion Hurdle is mixed. Recent winners have failed to make the grade since Rooster Booster took the race, galloping to glory carrying masses of bets for his legion of followers back in 2003.

The last three renewals have seen horses towards the head of the betting market prevail, with last year's winner Detroit City storming home at odds of just 6/5, giving trainer Philip Hobbs his second win in the race in the last five years.

There has been the odd surprise though, such as when the Paul Nicholls-trained 33/1 shot Rigmarole stunned the betting public four years ago under a weight-carrying record for the race of 11st 12lbs.
