A Grade 2 race staged at Newbury's start-studded February fixture, the Game Spirit Chase, run over two-miles-one-furlong, is a noted trial for the Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham the following month and has a significant impact on odds on the ante-post betting lists.
This is a traditional stop along the way for top chasers and the betting public tend to have no fears about betting odds-on in this event, even though there have been a number of beaten hotpots in recent years.
Champion trainer Paul Nicholls seems to target this race every year and has won three of the last four renewals, so anyone considering a bet would have to strongly consider his candidate.
It's also worth noting that a good performance here could cause the ante-post odds to tumble for Cheltenham, so those wanting a bet on the Queen Mother Chase might be best advised to take the odds before the Game Spirit, as the value could disappear immediately after.
