Staged at Cheltenham on New Year's Day, the Grade 2 Dipper Novices' Chase, run over two-miles-five furlongs, is a quality event that can impact on the ante-post betting markets for a number of major betting races at the course's 'Festival' meeting eleven weeks later.
The undulating nature of the Prestbury Park circuit is the ultimate test for a young chaser, and the 'Dipper' has proved a sound indicator as to horses who will have an influence on the betting markets for the championship races.
In 2007, Alan King's My Way De Solzen justified the odds-on at 4/9 and then went on to score in tremendous fashion in the Arkle Chase, landing many sizeable bets in the process.
The Listener had won the race the previous year also at odds-on, heading the betting at 8/11, and whilst failing to make an impact at the Festival where he fell, he went on to win in Grade 1 company in Ireland and prove himself a high class performer at up to three miles.
