Prince of Wales placed horses top-rated by Timeform
Although it's hard to escape the impression that this year's Coral Eclipse is not likely to live up to the high standard set in previous years, Timeform today pinpointed the Prince of Wales Stakes at Royal Ascot as the key piece of form.
Phoenix Tower finished a short-head in front of Pipedreamer on that occasion, the pair four lengths behind the impressive winner, Duke Of Marmalade.
Phoenix Tower is currently vying for favouritism with Mount Nelson around the [4.5] mark on Betfair, with Multidimensional looking very much the Henry Cecil second string at [9.0]. Pipedreamer is an [6.4] chance on the exchange.
Kieran Packman, Timeform's Communications Manager, commented: "Phoenix Tower was upped to ten furlongs for the first time at the Royal meeting and matched his previous best, which came when runner-up on his previous outing in the Lockinge.
"He's made good progress this season and is sure to go close in what looks a below average running of the Eclipse.
"Pipedreamer almost certainly wasn't suited by soft going at Sandown on his penultimate start and got back on track at Ascot. He's shown more than enough to suggest that he'll be finding a Group race before long.
"Mount Nelson caught the eye at the Royal meeting, as he didn't get the run of the race in the Queen Anne. However, for all he should have no problem stepping back up to ten furlongs, he's yet to show the level of form that Phoenix Tower and Pipedreamer recorded at Ascot."
Betfair's Tony Calvin added: "In truth, it has been a pretty light betting heat so far, with no short-priced, outstanding candidate for our customers to oppose or support in size.
"I suspect punters are waiting on the weather over the next few days before finalizing their weekend position."
