Wetherby's Castleford Handicap chase is an event that has been through a series of changes in recent years having not so long ago been a Grade 1 contest that saw the best two-mile chasers in the business going head-to-head, normally carrying significant bets from the betting public.
Last year the race was downgraded to a 0-145 handicap but still retains some lustre and is sought after by many trainers. Last year Calatagan, at odds of 14/1 bucked a trend that had previously seen mainly horses at the head of the betting list prevail, the likes of Kadaran, Geos and Turgeonev all returning at relatively short odds having been the subject of significant betting interest.
Although the race is run over the minimum distance of two miles, the testing Wetherby circuit with its uphill finish and generally soft ground places stamina at a premium. Horses that stay well beyond the race trip can often come into the equation and should be considered when considering a bet on the race.
