A serious trial for the Cheltenham Gold Cup the following month, Newbury's three-mile AON Chase, a strong betting heat, is also a significant influence on the ante-post odds list for the 'Blue Riband' in March.
In 2007, Kauto Star landed the spoils (having been the subject of some serious betting interest) before going on to Cheltenham glory, and there is every reason to believe that Paul Nicholls' star could follow the same route again in 2008.
Nicholls appears to target this race with his best horses and has proved popular with the betting public in this event (even at short odds), winning four of the last seven renewals with Shotgun Willy, See More Business and Valley Henry.
It is fair to say that whatever wins the AON Chase is likely to attract plenty of bets for the feature event and could go to Cheltenham as one of the betting favourites, although only Kauto Star has actually gone on to land the bets in the history of the contest.
