The traditional curtain-raiser to the sensational Cheltenham festival, one of the biggest sports betting events of the years, the Grade 1 Supreme Novices Hurdle is always run at a breakneck pace and provides a result that often sets the tempo for the whole of the first day's betting and beyond.
Run over an extended two miles on Cheltenham's Old Course, the race has been won by some high-class performers beloved of the betting public, of whom most recently Hors La Loi and Brave Inca have gone on to land significant bets in the Champion Hurdle in subsequent years. The winner of this race can be expected to receive a quote for the following year's Champion hurdle with most firms in their ante-post odds betting lists.
Four of the last six renewals have been won by Irish challengers, some being the subjects of serious individual bets at rewarding odds, whilst most recently Ebaziyan caused a shock to event the most loyal of Irish punters when romping home in 2007 at odds of 40/1, leaving the bookmakers the only ones in the betting ring to be celebrating.
