I’ve been lucky enough to be involved in the betting industry since leaving college, where I studies Economics & Sociology with varying levels of success! I grew up with horseracing and betting and my late father was an avid racing fan, so I used to tag along with him every Saturday or Sunday to the Curragh, Fairyhouse, Punchestown or the Phoenix Park. Other kids were busy in the playground whilst I was trying to sort out the Placepot!
My first job was with a Dublin based Spread Betting company where – on leaving four years later – I was looking after their horseracing markets and trading 2-3 meetings per day. I also got involved in other sports like greyhounds and snooker.
My rule of thumb was that the more volatile the sport, the better! If I was going to be working until 11pm at night trading something, it may as well be something action-packed! Thankfully they are still around to tell the tale! I’m a committed spread-betting punter and think it’s a fantastic medium for betting – between Betfair and the spreads, you’ve got so many options in terms of expressing your punting opinion.
I joined Betfair in September 2003 and have worked here ever since in the Marketing and Communications departments. In terms of betting on Betfair, I’d be involved in Irish and UK horseracing quite a bit as well as Rugby Union, Darts and bits and pieces of most other sports from time to time.
