Sir Des Champs demonstrated a combination of speed and stamina to land the opening race on Day 3 of the Cheltenham Festival, landing the Jewson Chase from the gallant Champion Court in second. Champion Court took the field along in the early stages with Zaynar just in behind the leader. Sir Des Champs also raced relatively prominently with Peddlers Cross making his way around the inside. As they turned for home, Champion Court was still travelling well at the head of affairs but Sir Des Champs was looming up in behind, with the majority of other rivals beaten, including the disappointing Peddlers Cross. Sir Des Champs jumped the last alongside Champion Court and stormed up the hill with ahead of his main rival. For Non Stop finished back in third.

Pertemps Final
Winner: Cape Tribulation

Cape Tribulation finished best of all to land the Pertemps Final, battling on well to deny Catch Me and Cantlow inside the final furlong. Buena Vista took the field along in the early stages with Palace Jester for company, whilst the likes of Sergeant Guibs and Our Father were held up. With a circuit to go, Palace Jester and Buena Vista remained at the head of affairs with Kayf Aramis just in behind the leaders and travelling comfortably. As the field turned for home, Buena Vista quickly faded out of contention and Kayf Aramis took over with the emerging Cantlow but Cape Tribulation loomed up, looking the most likely danger to the leading group. Cape Tribulation found plenty for pressure inside the closing stages, and battled all the way to the line, holding off Catch Me, who finished well in second.

Ryanair Chase
Winner: Riverside Theatre

Riverside Theatre got the best of a thrilling finish to land the Ryanair Chase for Barry Geraghty and Nicky Henderson, overhauling Albertas Run and Medermit in the closing stages. Great Endeavor took the field along initially with the likes of Rubi Light and Little Josh just in behind, whilst Riverside Theatre was never travelling well in midfield. As the pace quickened, many of the runners were caught out by A P McCoy's move to the front on board Albertas Run, but Riverside Theatre eventually began to pick his way through the field with Medermit also travelling strongly. Albertas Run, Medermit and Riverside Theatre jumped the last together and there was a three-way battle to the line with Riverside Theatre just getting up under another superb ride from Barry Geraghty, who took his tally of winners to five for the week.

World Hurdle
Winner: Big Buck's

Big Buck's was the imperious winner of his fourth World Hurdle, having too much left in the closing stages for Voler la Vedette, with Smad Place back in third. Cross Kennon and Five Dream took the field along for the first circuit with Big Buck's just sitting in behind the leaders under a patient Ruby Walsh. Oscar Whisky remained just on the shoulder of the defending champion, whilst Andrew Lynch was content to anchor Vole la Vedette towards the rear of the field. With four fences left to go, Mourad took over in front, with Big Buck's making his move into second position and Oscar Whisky continuing to track the favourite in third. As the field turned for home, Ruby Walsh began to get serious on the favourite as Voler la Vedette travelled smoothly into second, with Oscar Whisky fading out of contention for a lack of stamina. Voler la Vedette didn't have enough to get past Big Buck's in the final furlong, however, and the Paul Nicholls trained gelding found more and more in customary fashion.

Byrne Group Plate
Winner: Salut Flo

Notable In-Running Highs and Lows: Salut Flo traded at [8.4] in race day market, Divers was matched at [3.0]

Salut Flo made all to land the Byrne Group Plate with The Cockney Mackem in second and Glam Gerry back in third. Salut Flo set a strong early pace under Tom Scudamore with Radetsky March and Finger On The Pulse just in behind the leader, whilst Crack Away Jack and Divers were held up at the tail of the field. Salut Flo generally jumped well throughout and, as the pace quickened, had more and more rivals in trouble. Divers emerged from the pack and looked the main danger but even he had no answer to the David Pipe runner, who bounded clear up the hill, proving well in advance of his mark. The Cockney Mackem ran on for second place whilst Glam Gerry came from nowhere to snatch third.

Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup Handicap Chase
Winner: Sunnyhillyboy

Sunnyhillboy landed the victory in Kim Muir Challenge Cup under Alan Berry with Becauseicouldntsee finishing second and Exmoor Ranger in third. Becauseicouldntsee was the early leader with Start Me Up and Benbane Head heading the pursuing group, whilst Brackloon High was held up towards the tail of the field under a patient ride. Positions remained largely unaltered with a circuit left to go, although Sona Sasta began to make steady headway after being left at the start. As the pace began to quicken, Becauseicouldntsee still led the pack with Start Me Up travelling smoothly into contention along with Sunnyhillboy. With two left to go there were still half a dozen in with a chance but, after jumping the last, Sunnyhillboy's stamina began to kick in as he overhauled the longtime leader and pressed on up the hill. Becauseicouldntsee stuck on for second whilst Exmoor Ranger did the best of the others back in third.
