Wimbledon specialist Droopys Kiowa shows she's smart as well as fast

Darrell Williams reviews the past seven days racing at Wimbledon and looks ahead to this weekend's action...

Watching out for a bias in favour of railers or wide runners is one of the most important trading angles in greyhound racing, and for those playing at Wimbledon last Saturday it was soon apparent that the inside was holding a distinct advantage.

It was certainly enough to put this correspondent off the well-touted Madges Millions in the A2 (finished fourth from trap five), but as well as providing relatively cheap lays the other edge to be gained on these occasions is to note the greyhounds that have run well against the bias. On this occasion the dog to take away is Droopys Kiowa, who showed plenty of pace into the first bend from her seemingly disadvantageous trap six berth to make it three A1 wins on the spin for the Andrew Peacock trained three-year-old. She remains one to keep on the right side of.

From an inside draw, I was also taken by Pigalle Lady in the S1 on the same card, who narrowly failed to peg back Well Park Lady having looked unlucky in running. Phil Rees' bitch has still only had a handful of runs over the six bend trip and can gain compensation for her supporters if repeating that performance in this Saturday's feature (22:15) where the opposition looks far more inviting.

On a night which also features three other grade one events, Boherash Einri can return to winning ways in the A1 at 22:00 providing the outside is back on song - there was again only one winner from each of trap five and six on Tuesday - in a race where Monzante is an interesting newcomer (ex-Hall Green). I'll take consistent Wayward Ted to score in the other A1 (21:30) where Glendan, who was a shade disappointing last time but remains one to be wary of, is amongst the opposition.

The H1 hurdles race looks decent (21:00) with useful Generous Man given the vote to overcome Broadacres Dan. On Friday, it's hard not to see Talkspot making it five A1 wins in six starts in the feature at 20:30. His ability to stay wide and stalk from off the pace makes him just about the most consistent runner at the track at the moment.

Blonde Jeannie highlighted as my long range fancy for the Oaks, which begins a week on Tuesday (4th December) is now trading as favourite on the Betfair market after her win in the bitches race at the Racing Post Festival on Tuesday, although Westmead Tina did her own cause no harm when getting up on the line in the Sky-covered puppy final on the same card.

For those looking even further ahead the 2008 Derby market has been trading for some time, and while Barnfield On Air understandably remains the one to beat at this stage, Rio Quando talked up here a few weeks back, remains an appealing long term darker prospect.

For those in the area try and get down to Wimbledon on Saturday 8th December for a chance to pick up an unusual and imaginative Christmas present. The local Welfare branch has organised a Silent Auction in the Grandstand Bar that night with a chance to bid on items including a day behind the scenes at Channel 4 racing, as well as a day with the Sky dogs' team plus many other enticing items.
