Back to the Old School
A quick getaway will give Old School (T1) a terrific chance to take the Diane Morton Birthday Stakes in the second race at Romford (19:46).

Old School (T1) is drawn in his favoured box one and is sure to take all the beating if he can make a decent start. The David Mullins-trained December 2004 whelp is not a renowned early flier and was slowly away on Thursday before running on to finish third, just half a length behind Grenrose Champ. He was a winner in an A5 contest previous to that when he flew off arc four to defeat Machine Mac by one-and-a-half lengths. Live chance.

Minnies Nassaro (T2) is on the downgrade and hasn't managed a win for 19 races. This June 2003 whelp did though rack up two victories over Loftcat in trials last month. But his race form is not so impressive and he was fifth, beaten six-and-a-half lengths by Aero Ivy in A5 company last week after finding trouble on bend three. He did account for Alrita Queen (T6) though beating the Martyn Wiley-trained bitch by two-and-a-quarter lengths. Not one to get involved with.

Newline Lady (T3) has been running in A4 company without much success. The Paul Young-trained bitch was third last time out in A5 grade and despite a less than impressive start, she finished third after finding traffic problems on arc four. The March 2004 whelp was almost eight-and-a-half lengths behind Alrita Queen (T6) when she finished fifth to Sign of Promise five runs ago, but she was badly baulked and sure to be closer this time.

Someanttobe (T4) was a winner last time out over 575 metres after trapping quickly to lead from start to finish in a three-length triumph over Girls Weekend. Back to the four-bend distance tonight and no fears that he will be left in the traps. Sure to be out quickly, but only three of his nine golds have come over 400 metres and cannot be trusted.

Queens Opinion (T5) is another Paul Young-trained runner, but unlikely to pose as much threat as Newline Lady (T3). His three career victories to date have all come over different distances to tonight's 400 metre test, although the December 2003 whelp did win a trial last week defeating Rockchase Lynn by more than four lengths over tonight's four-bend trip. Hard to fancy and one to lay.

Alrita Queen (T6) hasn't taken gold since she scored with a quick-fire double in A5 company in December. Could only manage the wooden spoon last time out when the February 2005 whelp was almost nine lengths behind Aero Ivy, with Minnies Nassaro (T2) finishing fifth. She has ability and if her recent form is discounted, her January 13 second to Parish Hat (beaten a length) and her January 18 second (headed by Sign of Promise), gives her a chance.

Weekend to surprise?

Girls Weekend (T5) could spring a surprise in the 21:25 at Romford. The Paul Young-trained bitch, who looks to have plenty of improvement in her, is looking to follow up her latest S3 gold with another success in better company.

Killeacle Fiona (T1) has gone 13 races without a win, but she gave a creditable performance last Thursday as she led into bend two, but was beaten two lengths by Blonde Jewel. The Peter Payne-trained December 2003 whelp did account for Involved Again (T3), who was a length back in fourth, and Droopys Violet, who was a further two-and-a-half lengths back in fifth. Not one to strike a line through.

Swiss Duchess (T2) loves to hit the rails, but unlikely to blitz her rivals at the start. The July 2004 whelp was bumped at bend three as she finished third to Thatchers Boy last time out, but that was good enough to account for Involved Again (T3) who was a length back in fourth after hitting traffic on bends one and six. Likely to find one too good.

Involved Again (T3) has lost the winning habit, but has the ability to come late and take the honours. The David Mullins-trained bitch was fourth with every chance in a three-length defeat to Blonde Jewel last time out and the March 2004 whelp could well reverse the form from that race with Killeacle Fiona (T1). Another contender.

Droopys Violet (T4) was behind both Killeacle Fiona (T1) and Involved Again (T3) in a five-and-a-half length defeat to Blonde Jewel last Thursday. The Margaret Lucas-trained bitch was quickly away but was soon pegged back over the 575 metre race. She did collect the prize money three runs back when she trapped well and always led to see off Beautiful Honcho in S3 company. Unlikely to be in gold medal contention.

Girls Weekend (T5) has clocked up two wins from her last three starts in S3 company, but will find life tougher in this grade. The July 2004 whelp was quickly away from box six and also finished well to defeat Black Shadow by a length. She is one of three runners in the race trained by Paul Young and if she breaks quickly she may well have the finishing speed to surprise a few.

Roof us (T6) is no stranger to London Road and has chalked up two recent victories in A3 and A4 grades. But the Paul Young-trained dog was beaten 10 lengths last time out by Gems Star after being bumped early on and before that, he was very slowly away in an eight-length defeat to Elliott Wave. The December 2003 whelp needs to get off to a flier if he is to grab his 17th career victory.

You Did What to tough it out

Romford's final race on the card (22:30) looks a competitive affair and it may well pay to side with the tough You Did What (T2), who is sure to be doing her best work late on.

Benro Bravo (T1) has been placed fifth in his last three runs and needs to find his trapping boots to make the equation here. Was quickly away on January 13 and always led to defeat Countrywideflash and he followed that up with a similar performance in victory over Boma Act. The February 2004 whelp could easily make the shake-up.

You Did What (T2) showed terrific stamina in defeating Back Page Bauber by a length last time out. Battled on gamely and came again to see off her rival after a quick start. The Paul Young-trained bitch was overhauled off arc six the time before, as Watch it Rock got the better of her by a short head. Tough customer and will be in the thick of the action.

Gems Star (T3) has been running in S2 company without too much joy, but did run in an S1 grade contest last time out. He was slowly away though and was baulked early on before being crowded out late on and finished fourth, six lengths behind Mine. The James Reynolds-trained runner is not noted for his trapping and unlikely to follow trap four out of the gates.

Roncarrig View (T4) has finished second in his last three S1 outings and was unlucky last time out when he was beaten a length by Mine, with Gems Star five lengths back in fourth. No reason to see a reversal in that form and he's likely to get a flier, which could make him the one to cause a stir at a decent price.

Blonde Jewel (T5) is stepping up in grade after recent victories in S2 and S3 company. The Romford newcomer was fourth to Gems Star (T3) on February 10, nine lengths behind after reaching the first bend last and a repeat of that could see another heavy defeat. The January 2005 whelp does usually show good early pace, but one to stay well clear of.

Sign on Buster (T6) cannot be relied on to get away quickly, but could still make the frame. The Martyn Wiley-trained dog was third last time out losing by two-and-three-quarter lengths to Mine and one-and-three-quarter lengths to Roncarrig View (T4), but he did have Gems Star (T3) three lengths behind in fourth.
The April 2003 whelp's best time of 36:35 (Feb 7) puts him right in there and he could be in the running for gold.
