Which dogs should the punters have been piling on at Newcastle?

The Racing Post's Jonathan Hobbs reviews the All England Cup up in the north east...

Training honours went first one way, then the next, and then finally elsewhere as the Sky cameras rolled into Newcastle for the All England Cup final last week.

Boherbradda Mac remains a greyhound definitely to watch in 2008. He first caught the eye, and was mentioned in dispatches, at Belle Vue a few weeks ago and there was even more to like about Harry Williams' runner as he sluiced home in the opening sprint.

He would also go quicker than the equally impressive Jethart Joe in the top division of the two-bender and, while he will undoubtedly return to four bends soon, Boherbradda Mac can continue the winning ways. Belle Vue's 470m just taxes his stamina, but give a few months and he will be flashing round it.

Another dog also earning a second mention is Pond Gallileo. He remains a top-class prospect and will always weave his way if possible over four bends, as he did last week, but as he matures a return to six bends will produce win after win for the Williams team.

Numerically, Harry scooped the training honours on the night after the David Seaman part-owned In Safe Hands produced a great turn of early speed to win at a price over 480 metres and the fact his rivals pretty much had every chance underlined the promise shown by the winner.

And look out for Pond Astronaut on his next foray. He ran in by far the worst of the going from five in his race behind Barnfield Weeman and was closing on the winner all the way to the line. Meenala Cruiser, third in the same race, will bolt in soon when he finally manages to dominate.

Graham Hutt's back-to-back wins with Barnfield Weeman and Go Edie Honda helped make it a good night for the Kinross kennel, and both he and Harry Williams now turned their attentions to winning the main event, and both had good chances of success with Droopys Tobey and Rapidvite Liam.

Ultimately, though, it was Elaine Parker, or rather her son Sean and his partner Carly Philpott, who did.

They trained Wirght Signal to the minute and he trapped the best of all the greyhounds on show that night. That paved the way for success and he should keep on winning, he is difficult to get to in front.

The show moved on to the Racing Post Festival series of races at Walthamstow and with so much Open racing over 10 days or so, there has been plenty to take in.

But dogs to follow from those early nights were Westmead Alec, who has made a great recovery from serious injury; Butterbridge Ali, unlucky in a six-bend competition, and Perrys Tango, who is sure to improve after his sprint comeback at the weekend.
