Tips and pointers galore from a wonderful night's racing at the 'Don
Jonathan Hobbs goes over Tueday night's Wimbledon action...
Ballymac Under was superb in winning the Juvenile at Wimbledon on Tuesday, but you couldn't help thinking his task was helped by the Farloe dogs having their own private battle up front. That is no criticism of the winner who showed great trackcraft in continuing his unbeaten run and thankfully it sparked the great RP headline 'Mac The Ninth'.
Looking ahead, the first five at least should be monitored closely. Farloes Hurricane and Reason ran stormers and will go well in the Derby, Opening Artist flew late and Ballymac Rita stayed on nicely to the pick-up. And I'm sure that Sibsey Showtime will get back on the winning trail soon, but he definitely didn't handle trap one at Wimbledon that well.
And, put simply, I thought the supporting card was outstanding.
Clover Captain was for me the eyecatcher in the bottom division of the puppy stake behind Aero Blackjack. Nick Colton's dog stayed on well very and with experience could make into a nice six-bend dog. Kid Joker's early pace never allowed well-backed Rockburst Mason the chance to run at them.
Toosey Blue stamped his class over all his rivals in the British-bred and should have a great year. He has already run well fresh at the track, but has also proved a great competition dog. Runner-up Unique Picture showed plenty of pace in behind. He may have been flattered, but possibly not and he is one to watch an an April 06.
Kildare Lark will be back on track soon. A three-week break likely cost him victory after he was slightly held on, but take nothing away from improving jumper Firm Handed, who took his chance well. The beaten favourite still remains the Grand National choice for me, although those Springbok dogs will make it difficult!
Ninja Jamie looked every inch a Derby dog as he returned after a long lay-off to make it two wins from two starts. Charlie Lister already looks to have a strong hand for the Classic with this one and his brother Farloe Reason, although give respect to runner-up Ardmayle Champ. He might be second string to kennelmate Ballymac Under but, like Lister, Matt Dartnall has every reason to be excited by the Derby challenge ahead.
Blonde Jeannie heads for Tuesday's Arc heats in tip-top form. While narrowly beaten by the game Kilelton Rose, it was a pleasing return for John Mullins' Oaks winner, who was snappier early than market rival Broadway Sizzler, although she, too, impressed with the way she stayed on.
Droopys Nelson remains the one to beat in the Golden Jacket, which starts on Monday. He is showing great stamina and impressed in victory over six bends (Shelbourne Rich the eyecatcher, although disappointing for backers). If he gets on the bunny at the Kent track, even three runs around 714m should not halt his progress.
Blonde Dino is sure to come on for his run in the 460m event, but in terms of pace shown Milldean Buster and Yahoo Commander caught the eye behind strong-running winner Eye Onthe Force. The former also heads for the Arc and deserves to be respected, he really does have pace to burn although 475m tests him.
