The Laurels gets underway with six first round heats at Belle Vue, and while quality-wise this year's renewal is slightly lacking in class - perhaps partly down to entries closing before Tuesday's Betfair East Anglian Derby card - it can hardly be called uncompetitive.
In my book there's one stand out selection tonight, Target Brett (9.10), who should also be backed outright. Headlining a strong Julie Bateson team, he has already proved his talents over the 470m trip when winning the Manchester Puppy Cup a fortnight ago and is unbeaten in three tries over the CD. As an Oct 2007 whelp, he'll start this event as a puppy, but by the final - live on Sky Sports a week on Tuesday - he'll (hopefully) have the chance to show he has come of age. With middle seed Shale Dimitar on his inside this evening, he looks perfectly drawn and [1.8] should be taken along with [7.2] ante post.
Cabra Boss unsurprisingly is also popular ante post, and the Select Stakes third, will be short for tonight's heat (8.25). But he's not been round before, and with the Mc Nairs still on holiday - I loved Rab's live chat from Ibiza on Sky the other night - it might be the time to take him on especially with in-form Iconic Blue on his immediate left. A lay at [1.9] is the suggestion.
Sunoak Crystal has been a little frustrating recently, losing out in the National Oaks final at Nottingham last week, but she runs this track well and looks too classy for the opposition in her heat at 9.25. Back at [2.6] or better.
