"Going Abroad in the 8:17 looks nicely berthed outside rails favouring Rockchase Zola. I’d be hoping for [3.5]."
Romford's Puppy Cup, always a high quality competition, begins with six first round heats this evening and Darrell Williams has the best bets...
While the aim of this column is to pinpoint individual race winners, for those looking to play ante post, favourite Lenson Bolt looks sure to take plenty of beating. Winner of the Kent Derby, having broken the track record in the first round, he has always been highly thought of by trainer Tony Collett but will be very short odds in his heat at 8:01, and is best played outright.
Steady Major was part of a double for Harlow based Phil Simmonds on Romford's Sky Sports covered Essex Vase final card last week, getting up to beat Going Abroad, and both are worth backing in their respective heats. Steady Major has drawn a particularly competitive heat (9:20), and while his off the pace style is always a concern at somewhere like Romford, I still fancy him to wear the opposition down. Odds of [3.5] or better should be taken.
Going Abroad (8:17) who can do his own bit for that TV form, looks a rapidly improving sort, and is more of a conventional Romford type who tends to do her racing from the front. She looks nicely berthed outside rails favouring Rockchase Zola. I'd be hoping for [3.5] again.
While Westmead Carl will be much shorter in his heat (8:48), he is also worth including. Representing Nick Savva, who won the Puppy Derby with Westmead Logan, the Puppy Classic semi-finalist can make all at expected odds of [1.8] or bigger.
