Challenge Tour victrories show 27-year-old Scot has form on his side...

In what must be one of the weakest fields in European Tour history, it's very easy to envisage a previously unknown, shock winner. Amongst the large group of players in three figures that also contains dozens of complete no-hopers, Scotland's Peter Whiteford stands out as the week's best value.

Though the saying that form is temporary, class is permanent is usually true in relation to sport, in the case of golf it should equally be said that nobody ever won a tournament playing badly. And many of those at shorter odds than Whiteford have been playing consistently badly for a very long time. The likes of Jarrod Moseley, Gareth Paddison and Michael Long are priced according to previous minor glories, despite having shown little hint of challenging for, let alone landing, a tournament for ages.

Even towards the head of the market, besides the favourite Daniel Chopra and badly out-of-form Michael Campbell, there's very little evidence of recent winning form. The fact that yesterday's men Craig Parry and Peter Senior are both priced at well under 50 speaks volumes about the field's strength in depth. In such a scenario, good recent form of any kind - even at a lower level - is a major asset.

Few Europeans of any level finished the season in better spirits than Whiteford. The 27-year-old from Kirkcaldy earned full European Tour playing privileges by winning two Challenge Tour events in the space of a month Holland and Germany. Top-10s either side of those victories confirm that this was no fluke, and that Whiteford could prove an interesting Challenge Tour recruit over the winter months.
