Three horses dominate the Betfair ante-post lists for the St Leger (Doncaster, September 15) after a 40-strong entry was announced today.
Soldier of Fortune (5.3) and Aqaleem (5.7) head the market, although Mahler (6.4) is perhaps a surprising frontrunner in the betting.
A stable companion of Soldier of Fortune, Mahler was beaten by more than 20 lengths in Authorized's Derby, though he did go some way to refurbishing his reputation with an easy win over Veracity in the Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot.
Jockey Pat Smullen brushed off Mahler's Derby flop by describing him as 'babyish', but the colt looked the finished article at Ascot and trainer Aidan O'Brien says the Leger will suit him.
Soldier of Fortune's chance at Doncaster is there for all to see after his nine-length demolition of Alexander of Hales at the Curragh, while Aqaleem delighted Marcus Tregoning in finishing third at Epsom on only his fourth start.
