WGC CA Betting: Tiger'll tame the Monster but he's not in every market so search elsewhere for value
TQ can't get away from the top man but has a glimmer of hope for punters searching for bigger odds
The Tiger Woods Tour hits Miami this week as the irrepressible Woods bids to increase his winning streak to eight straight victories. The Doral Golf Resort and Spa is the home of the Blue Monster course. Unfortunately for the rest of the field it is also a very happy hunting ground for a ravenous Tiger.
I could wax lyrical about Tiger for an awfully long time but I will try and keep it to the bare minimum. Tiger has won six times on this course, he has won his last seven tournaments and ominously for his opponents he now seems to have developed a penchant for toying with his rivals. JB Holmes, Aaron Baddeley and Ernie Els have all thought they had him beat in recent weeks only for him to come roaring back and leave them all shaking their heads.
On the betting front Tiger is currently trading at around [1.98] to take the tournament. Is that a real reflection on the chances of him winning this week? I would say yes and, if anything, going he should possibly be a little shorter. Will I back him? Yes. I will reinvest my Tiger winnings from last week, but I will also take the advice of my fellow Betfair golf expert Paul Krishnamurty and get on him to win the Masters at [2.24]. I wholeheartedly agree with Paul's theory that he may well go off at less than [2.0] when the event finally rocks around.
We are not going to get rich backing Tiger this week so we must seek some value elsewhere. As with last week there are some decent priced outsiders that may well come into the reckoning. The first on my list would be last week's European Tour winner Graeme McDowell. A player with a lot of ability, he is something of a frustration to the punter as he rarely starts at a decent price yet rarely wins. However, recent signs suggest he is near his best and with confidence high he may be worth a small interest this week. McDowell was a respectable sixth on his last visit to Doral and represents decent value in the Winner market at [210.0].
Another lively outside this week is Bob Hope Classic winner DJ Trahan. He has put in some solid if not spectacular performances since his win and may just be ready to challenge again this week. Trahan plays his best golf on courses where birdies are quite easy to come by and after a few weeks of tough courses he may well relish an opportunity to post a low number. You can't go to far wrong in the Winner market at current odds of [500.0] and he is also worth a look at in both the Top 5 and Top 10 Finish markets.
Of the other markets it is the Top Rest of the World market that really takes my fancy. Predictably Els and Singh are the big guns at the head of the market but I can see both of them coming unstuck this week. Current US Open champion Angel Cabrera fits the bill with a game that should be suited by the challenge ahead. He is a man who can overpower any course and I expect him to be in and around the top five come Sunday afternoon. That will be enough for him to take the Top Rest of the World crown at current odds of [15.5].
Almost every week another of the top players comes out in the media exclaiming their disbelief at just how good Tiger is. This week it was Geoff Ogilvy who claims he can't understand how Tiger putts so well week in week out. Well Geoff, you could always ask him but something tells me that the secret is only helpful if you are a legend in your own lifetime.
