Steve Elkington – Is he due another strong US PGA Championship?
“Elkington comes here fresh off a top-6 finish in last week’s Reno Tahoe Open and he could go well again in what is clearly his favourite major.”
Steve casts his eye over the former US PGA Champions and comes up with a value pick in two markets!
This particular market looks littered with deadwood, many of the candidates haven't won in ages and are woefully out of form, and one such candidate heads the market!
Tiger Woods will be very keen to put up a bold show this week, if for no other reason than to shut his former caddy, Stevie Williams, up. Williams' interview after Adam Scott's win on Sunday was bizarre in the extreme as he clearly took a swipe at Woods, claiming that last week was "the greatest week of my life as a caddie". He's since reasoned that he went too far but wouldn't it be interesting to see Scott and Woods paired together in Georgia?
Stevie really ought to have learnt his lesson by now; he made a fool of himself back in 2008 when he was less than polite about Phil Mickelson. Can you imagine what he'd be like with a Twitter account?
Anyway, back to the golf and it's hard to make much of a case for Woods, no matter how inspired he is. After a decent first round back from injury at Firestone he struggled with his game off the tee and even more understandably, his touch on the greens was poor. It's very hard to imagine it all suddenly clicking here.
Last year's champ, Martin Kaymer, is struggling with swing changes and not quite at his best and Y E Yang was very disappointing last week. David Toms was the surprise winner here ten years ago and he's enjoying a successful season, whilst Phil Mickelson must hold a magnificent chance if he can start well. The rest look readily beatable with one exception - Steve Elkington.
The Elk, champion in 1995, has a fantastic tournament record, with an additional five top-7 finishes, including a tied 5th just last year. He comes here fresh off a top-6 finish in last week's Reno Tahoe Open and he could go well again in what is clearly his favourite major.
He's also worth a small wager in the Top Australian market, where the bang in-form pair of Adam Scott and Jason Day make the market.
