US PGA Championship Betting: The Punter's Day 1 Update

With no huge surprises and no clear leader after the first day of action in Michigan, it was business as usual for the Punter. Keep up with his picks here.

It was pretty standard day one fodder for us to digest at Oakland Hills. The odd player sprinted away from the field and then tumbled back. The course, as is often the case at this event, was not as ferocious as had been suggested and those with a morning tee time enjoyed the better conditions. There was also a weather delay which resulted in the last few groups still having a few holes to play today.

My main pick, Phil Mickelson, recovered well after bogeying his first two holes. A short missed par putt took the gloss off of a decent round on the last hole but I'm quite happy with his level par start. His price contracted by four points to around [8.2] after he'd finished his round as the afternoon starters saw their good starts slip away. That certainly applied to Retief Goosen. He had been four under par through eight holes, but ended up shooting two over.

Other than Lefty and one of my big outsiders, Ryan Moore, who also shot level par, my picks have been atrocious. The only saving grace was that I didn't back Kenny Perry. It had been suggested that he had an eye injury before play started so no-one could moan they couldn't see it coming when he withdrew after the first round.

No further bets yet but tonight will be busy. I'll be circling the market looking for an opportunity later on. Like most majors you need to be up with the pace and I'll be looking closely at the top of the leaderboard tonight as the stagger unwinds.
