Rory with his US Open trophy
"McIlroy is now favourite to win the Open at [7.0]."
McIlroy blazes a trail to claim first Major title in Maryland and immediately becomes favourite to win the Open too...
Rory McIlroy clinched victory at the US Open with a remarkable performance that sends a strong message to rest of the golfing world.
The 22-year-old became the youngest winner for over 80 years as he played four excellent rounds to lead from start to finish at Congressional.
McIlroy's performance was remarkable for many reasons, not least because he claimed his first major after his spectacular choke in the US Masters at Augusta only two months ago. Then he lead for three rounds before throwing it all away with a final round of 80.
His lead going into the final round here was considerably bigger than it was in Georgia, but some punters still probably harboured reservations. McIlory showed no jitters though, he was relentless on the way to victory, winning by a staggering eight shots, 16 under over all. Jason Day came in second, with Lee Westwood tied in third.
It was the second year in a row that the US Open has been won by a Northern Irishman but the most profound echoes were those of Tiger Woods at his best. This victory might well signify a changing of the guard at the top of world golf and many bettors will be backing Rory for more glory in the future. In fact, he's now favourite to win the Open at [7.0].
