The defending champion is obviously well-suited to US Open conditions, having made all five cuts and improved with each year. Following last year's success at Pebble Beach, Gmac confirmed his elevated status with an outstanding run that yielded two more victories, a starring role at the Ryder Cup and barely a weekend out of contention. Nobody in world golf was more impressive during that period, but McDowell's form has dipped alarmingly in recent months. He's recorded a best finish of just 30th from his last eight strokeplay starts and suffering devastating collapses at the Players Championship and Wales Open.
