After a disjointed US Open, Tareq Quiroz is looking forward to a birdie fest in Germany...

What do they say about the best laid plans? Well, they certainly went awry last week in New York. Fair play to Lucas Glover for his US Open triumph but in truth I hope I never see another major as disjointed as that ever again. But that's history now and we can all move on to a potentially exciting weekend of golf. There is a decent event in the US but I will be concentrating my attention on the BMW International Open in Germany...

The Course

This respected European Tour event takes place on a well established course. The Golfclub Munchen Eichenreid was opened in 1989 and has quickly become a favourite venue of the top players. The course measures just over 7,000 yards which is incredibly short by modern standards for a par 72. That will be apparent in the scoring this week as you can expect a birdie fest. When John Daly won here in 2001 he finished on an amazing 27 under par. The forecast is for nice warm weather so we will definitely see some low scores this week.

The Favourite

Refreshingly we have a real tussle for the honour of market leader. Three young top class Europeans head the market and any one of them would be a deserved favourite. Martin Kaymer is last year's winner and Henrik Stenson is the current Player Champion but it is the young sensation Rory McIlroy who I expect to get the nod to go off as the jolly at odds of around [14.0]. The main challenge punters will face this week is to try to predict how well the top players have recovered from their US Open exertions.

McIlroy exceeded my expectations at Bethpage but he was never really in the shake-up. If it wasn't for the efforts of last week both mentally and physically I would say he justifies the role of market leader. However, this is not a place to come to flat. There is no option to ease your way into this event as you will be steamrollered by the birdie frenzy that will no doubt occur on day one. McIlroy may well turn out to be a real flat track bully in the future and I am sure he will win this event in the next few years, just not this year.

The Next Best Bets

I just can't see anyone who made the cut last week in New York featuring this week. I would rather be on someone who just missed the cut than a player who had the stresses of being in contention. The man who really catches my eye is Alvaro Quiros. Forget last week's performance as that isn't his type of course. Quiros has and will continue to win on a variety of tracks but make no mistake most of his winning will be where birdies come easy. This is highlighted in the fact that his last two wins have both come with winning scores of 19 under par. He will love this place and, very much like John Daly, he could reduce it to a pitch and putt for much of the way round. At current odds of [29.0] Quiros has to be the man at the top of my staking plan this week.

The Massive Outsider

I don't really see any three figured winners this week but that isn't to say there aren't plenty of big-priced options. I like the young South African Thomas Aiken. He is a winner waiting to happen and it might just be this week. He has had six top 10 finishes already this season and will fancy his chances of as the season progresses. With the attention on the big names he may slip under the radar at decent odds of around [70.0].

I can't leave this section without giving a shout out for big John Daly. As a previous winner here he will have good memories and if his driving is up to the mark then he could easily go in again. He has a much brighter chance than many around him so he is a must inclusion this week at odds of [80.0].

Interesting Info

Surprisingly, nobody has ever defended this title so all eyes will be on Martin Kaymer to see if he can become the first. We haven't had a wire to wire winner since Sandy Lyle in 1991 so don't get too carried away by who is leading after round one. With birdies so readily available we could see plenty of change, even in the final round.

Els tipped up last week +15! Tips this week... Quiros +6, Aiken +4, Daly Level Par, all missed the cut. What on earth is going on?
Hoping the advice given next week will be very, very good, to help recover the losses.
