Betfair's Tareq Quiroz checks out the weekend's top golfing action

Just 120 of last week's Barclay's field get to make the New York to Boston trip for round two of the FedEx play-offs. When the bell sounds for the start of the Deutsche Bank Championship on Friday morning, there will be a scramble to avoid being one of the 50 players who will be knocked out at the halfway stage.

There wasn't a dry eye in Westchester on Sunday as Steve Stricker holed out on the 18th to secure his first win for six years. But perhaps those moved to tears the most were the K.J Choi backers, who must have thought their man had the tournament in the bag when he hit the front on the back nine. Stricker wasn't to be denied, however, and he now tops the FedEx series. A glance at the world rankings shows the 40-year-old up to a dizzying number five. A top five player, in form and who no doubt feels on top of the world he certainly merits a wager at 50s.

The TPC of Boston is a fine setting for one of the newest events on tour. At 7,400 yards it's a course that is set-up for the big hitters. With Tiger back in the field this week on a course where he won last year, he'll take up a large percentage of the book for at least the first couple of rounds. This allows us to either take advantage of the inflated prices around on the other players pre-tournament, or to take a watching brief. Based on the assumption that Tiger will be close enough to keep his price at low single figures, any player making a good move up the leaderboard will not be subject to a massive price decrease.

Course form is fairly limited, but of the few that have made a mark on the Arnold Palmer designed track, it is clear that Vijay Singh has taken an immediate liking to it. With a win, three top-four finishes and the course record, he's a player who needs to be followed around here. With two missed cuts behind him, Vijay's price has shot out to 32, a price at which he simply must not be ignored.

Another stand out player with course form is Justin Rose. He has played this event each of the four years that it has been on the PGA Tour calendar, and has some excellent results. My one reservation is that his current price of 28 is a fraction too short - put an offer out at 30 and monitor the situation. One player whose price shouldn't worry you is Nathan Green. At around 400 he's worth a small interest, and if you can find value in the Top 10 Finish market, then get on him there too.

So what about Tiger? There's no doubting his pedigree on this course, but I feel he will come up a little short on his first start since that gruelling PGA win. I agree with the general consensus that Tiger will lift the inaugural FedEx Cup, but that doesn't mean he will win this week. There are plenty of points to play for in the remaining events to see Tiger walk away with the trophy, without winning each event. And at 2.86 I see no value in what is a high-class field. Also, with good weather this course can turn into a birdie blitz, meaning Tiger will have to be at his very best to prevail in what promises to be a great Labor Day weekend in Boston.

On the European Tour this week we have the Johnnie Walker Champs from Gleneagles. There's only one way to approach this tournament and that's with positive intent. Back Paul Casey pre-tournament if you can get 10's. He's in a class above the rest of the field and, on a course where he has won twice before, if he hits the front early his price will drop dramatically. With an excellent early tee-time on Thursday, it's all set-up for Casey to get off to a great start and go on to comfortably defend his title.

As Tiger menacingly makes his way into the fray, the FedEx series should have a lot more clarity following the conclusion of the Deutsche Bank, on its now traditional bank holiday finish. From the tea party in Boston to a right old knees up in bonny Scotland, hopefully we'll be toasting a couple of well-backed winners come the conclusion of this weekend's events.
