Canadian Open Betting: Tournament lover Jim can dominate Canada again
TQ breaks down the Canadian Open, the big PGA Tour event where Jim Furyk and Anthony Kim head the field
Here we are again! A year after toasting Padraig Harrington's Open victory and wondering whether that will propel him on to bigger and better things, the genial Irishman has gone and done it again. A superb performance in what was a difficult week has elevated Harrington to the much more exclusive two majors or more group.
This week's events plainly don't hold the same appeal as last week but there is enough quality on show to make for an exciting weekend.
The Canadian Open is the feature event on the PGA Tour this week and with so many players making the long trip across from the Open it won't be easy to pick a winner. The top six in the betting stand out as the class acts in this prestigious event. Jim Furyk is going for his third consecutive win in the tournament and at [9.4] in the Winner market he is my pick from the favourites. Despite an average year he has shown some recent signs of a return to form and last week's fifth place shows he is in good touch. Factor in the buzz he will get from returning to a tournament where he has such a good record makes him the definite pick this week and he must be supported.
There isn't the greatest strength in depth in this field so it is something of a challenge to find any value in the lower echelons of the market. However, as always there are one or two players who represent some value. The one that merits my selection as the long priced pick this week is Jerry Kelly. He has had something of an up and down year with plenty of missed cuts mixed in with some really good weeks. Forget last week's effort at the Open and concentrate on the fact that Kelly already has three top three finishes this season and can count himself a little unlucky not to have already secured a win this year. At current odds of [160.0] he is a must bet in the Winner market and is also worth a saver in the Top Five Finish market.
If you think that finding the winner this week is just too hard then you will be interested in the lay of the week. Selecting one of the favourites to lay can often be a productive policy to follow. Never does a week go by without a very good reason to oppose one of the market leaders and this week is no different. The man to be against this week is Anthony Kim, whilst undoubtedly one of the best young players that the US have produced in the last ten years he will not be able to produce the goods every week. He put in a great performance last week and looks every inch a major winner in the future. It is no surprise to see him short in this event but at [12.5] he is far too short to reproduce his top form after last week's exertions. There will be good times ahead for Kim but this week is not one of them.
The Glen Abbey Golf Club, Ontario is the host course and you can expect this venue to be a tough proposition for the players this week. Vijay Singh was the winner the last time this event was played at this course but he is not in opposition this week.
Glen Abbey is ranked amongst the hardest courses played on the PGA Tour but you can be sure we won't see a repeat of last week's difficulty level experienced at the Open. It promises to be an interesting week and for the golf punter it is invaluable in terms of how much information it can provide you on how players perform after a week like they had at Royal Birkdale. Expect Furyk to shine and for Kim to be found wanting in what should be a great week of golf at one of the oldest events in the world.
