With the possible exception of Luke Donald, Poulter can lay plausible claim to being the best Matchplay exponent in the world, having won both Volvo and Accenture world titles in the space of 16 months. He is clearly a 'winner', so one might expect him to break through in a major some time soon. The Open was the scene of Ian's best previous effort in a major, when finishing runner-up at Birkdale in 2008, although his wider links record is only ordinary.
