Two Englishmen go into the final round as favourites but don't rule out one of the greatest upsets ever....
Two English players will go into the last round of The Open as favourites on Befair after Ross Fisher and Lee Westwood were amongst a select few who didn't shoot over par on the third round at Turnberry this afternoon.
Lee Westwood shot a super 70 and it could have been even better had he not bogeyed the last. He traded at a low of [3.9] before that late mistake when he found the thick rough with his second shot and will go into the final round priced at [5.7] to win his first Major.
All the talk this week regarding Ross Fisher has revolved around his wife being due to give birth the day The Open started and his vow to abandon the course as soon as she went into labour. Three days later Mrs. Fisher is still sitting at home and that's pretty good news for those who backed him as high as 200 to win this week. He will go into the final round on three under (one behind the leader) and as the [5.4] favourite to win the tournament. Those lumping on him at all sorts of prices, long and short, will be hoping that call from Mrs. Fisher never comes tomorrow afternoon.
If that wasn't drama enough as far as this edition of The Open goes, how about the possibility of a man who will turn 60 this year actually winning the tournament? Prior to the start, Tom Watson was rightfully an 1000 shot on Betfair (just over £1,600 matched at this price) but the man who famously featured in the "Duel in the Sun" many moons ago will be in the final pairing as the [9.0] fourth favourite to walk away with the Claret Jug after shooting 71. He leads the tournament by one shot.
The virtually unknown Australian Mathew Goggin is just one behind Watson and trades at [13.5]; he traded at a low of 1.27 to finish as the third round leader before birdies from Watson on 16 and 17 ensured the veteran was settled as the winner in the market after being matched at a high of [21.0]. The ever-dangerous Retief Goosen is right in the mix as well, two behind the leader and trading at [7.0].
