Ernie Els will be a decent bet to get his 2008 European Tour campaign off to a good start on home soil when the Alfred Dunhill Championship gets underway at Leopard Way Golf Club in South Africa on December 6-9.
The 2005 tournament winner is leading the way in the 2007 Order of Merit standings and punters will no doubt be checking his odds when betting on what is the third event on the 2008 Tour.
Els enjoyed success in the Alfred Dunhill Championship in 1995 and 1999 too and would be worth a bet to make it four wins within 12 years, while fellow compatriot Charl Schwartzel was also triumphant in 2004, which suggests a 'home' player could have a big pull when looking at a bet.
European players have enjoyed their fair share of success in this event in recent years and that could be reflected in the betting odds. The 2006 winner heralded from Spain the shape of Alvaro Quiroz, while Germany's Marcel Siem has been successful this decade, which reinforces Europe's past glory in South Africa.
Patriotic punters may feel it is also be worth a bet on an English winner as Mark Foster, Justin Rose and Anthony Wall have all clinched the title since 2000. And with Rose pushing hard for Order of Merit glory this year, it could see an interesting early battle for supremacy on the new Tour which could throw up some interesting betting odds.
