Sterne finished sixth on his return to golf last week
With The Punter covering both main tours in his weekly column we have set Dan Geraghty a new test - find us three-ball winners every week. He kicks off at the Joburg Open where a golfer making a new start has caught his eye
The new golf season brings with it a new column for myself, picking out the best two/three ball selections from the PGA and European Tours. The column will be accountable, including a rolling profit/loss figure each week. Confidence in the selections will be indicated with a point rating of either 1 or 2.
Joburg Open Round One Three Balls
Richard Sterne [2.2] talked a good game going into last week's Africa Open, he loves the course (he is the course record holder at East London GC) and following a long absence due to an arthritic back condition, he felt he was ready to reintroduce himself to the golfing world. Sterne was rightly confident as only a slightly disappointing final round of 70 saw him finish respectable sixth on his first outing since February 2011. The South African admitted before the tournament that last week was the first time he had played 18 holes of golf in nearly a year!
Sterne is a past winner here and, while there has to be a chance he 'bounces' after a long week at the Africa Open, he is sounding good.
"I feel better than ever and I'm ready to compete."
Our Gary Player-esque friend couldn't have dreamed for better consecutive European Tour tournaments to come back in. Odds-against for Sterne to beat Oliver Wilson (who shot 78, 76 last weekend) and the lesser-spotted Rich Beem seems more than fair to me. Meanwhile, the punter thinks Sterne might have loftier ambitions than seeing off Oliver Wilson and Rich Beem.
Warren Abery [3.2] can feel a little hard done by, by the layers. He finds himself the rag in his (Thursday) 6am (UK time) three ball with Peter Hedblom and Andrea Pavan. Abery finished 41st last week while both opponents failed to make the cut by some distance. When you consider the South African has played this tournament in all five years of its existence, including when finishing 12th last year and 14th in 2008, and that both his challengers are making their tournament debuts this week, the odds are surely a little off kilter.
