Could Fred Couples be a contender this week?
"It took Ryan a long time to get his first tour victory but now that he has, he should find it a little easier to close out another one."
Dan Geraghty backs a player looking for second tournament win, a veteran with course form and a Scotsman who is trying to salvage his season...
This week I'm on a golf come down after the last of the Majors. I was willing Bubba to hang on and lift his first Major but it wasn't to be as Martin Kaymer's massive German balls of steel won the day.
This week, I'm inclined to opt for players that took no part in last week's draining test at Whistling Straits but my first pick is an exception to the rule. Defending Champion Ryan Moore has had a fine year thus far (including four top 10's) and the only thing missing is a win. It took Ryan a long time to get his first tour victory but now that he has, he should find it a little easier to close out another one. As you would expect the week after a Major, the competition isn't as strong as it could be and a win here would give Moore a great chance of being one of Pavin's picks at the Ryder Cup.
I put up Fred Couples a few weeks ago and he missed the cut. However, after some of the form he showed earlier in the year and his recent good showing at the Senior US Open, I'm willing to give him another chance at a course he finished an excellent fifth at last year and he's suprisingly missing the final Senior Major of the year for this.
Martin Laird has been ridiculously quiet for a long time. However, he's had two solid weeks in two massive events (WGC Bridgestone & last week at Whistling Straits) and Laird finished fourth here on his debut in the event two years ago. After a win at the end of last year and a fourth placed finish in the season opening event this year, it looked like Laird was on his way to stardom. However, the Ryder Cup ship has long since sailed for Martin this year, but there's plenty in the season left to salvage.
Dangers: Brandt Snedeker was a whisker away from the main column but he's disappointed one time too many this year, he's dangerous non the less. Keep that eye on Michael Sim, I'm not so sure it'll be this week, but soon. Baby Walrus, Kevin Stadler has been a favourite of mine for a little while, he lost a playoff here last year and is a danger to all. Richard S Johnson has been in fine form of late, recording a win in Europe and he's another that had a week off to recharge the batteries last week.
Bubba Watch: He was robbed! Bubba has done the column proud once again. This week, time off to dream of what might of been for the big man this week. He'll be spending most of the time getting ready for Celtic Manor by playing the course on his Xbox... http://yfrog.com/1ahz9zj
