While all eyes are on Turnberrry, Daniel Geraghty finds value in the field across the pond...
I was disappointed with David Toms last week. He started well but uncharacteristically missed a number of very short putts and couldn't get himself back into the tournament. It just wasn't happening for him and some weeks it goes like that. It was a good week for the column though with Jason Day and Brandt Snedeker both going as low as single figure prices, offering some great trading opportunities along the way.
This week's US field understandably lacks quality (due to competing with the Open!) but once again offers a wonderful chance to those players chasing their maiden victory on tour. All three selections this week have yet to win.
Being an Englishman, Brian Davis will be hurting at not being involved at the Open this week. Davis has had a good year thus far, particularly during May when three consecutive top ten finishes were kick-started by a fifth place finish at the Players. Should Davis find himself in contention this week I think we'll see him deal with the situation better than he has in the past. His Players performance has shown him he has nothing to fear, especially in a field like this.
Kevin Na has been quite vocal about his desperation to win on tour. He has to fancy his chances this week and should he put himself in contention on day one, he has a great chance to consolidate his position early on day two, he's in the first group out at 7.15am so he can really put the pressure on early.
Chris Stroud has spoken of his desire for consistency. He's confident that if he puts himself in the top 20 week on week then the chances to win will start appearing. Last week saw Stroud finish 15th at the John Deere Classic. It was his first top 20 finish since February (!) and he can build on that performance in this week field.
Selections:
Brian Davis (46.0)
Kevin Na (30.0)
Chris Stroud (80.0)
