Gary Woodland - available to back at 650
"Gary Woodland is capable of impressive birdie streaks and can tear courses apart with his length. It's a long-shot but in this field the price is right for a trade."
The world's best golfers are assembled at Firestone but there's another tournament elsewhere in the US which Dan Geraghty will also have his eye on
Blimey, three weeks ago, I made it known I thought Stuart Appleby was ready to win again and offered him up as a selection.
Despite disappointing a week later I was still keen on Appleby for a win and gave him a last chance in the main column. The next week I highlighted him as a danger and then last week was the first article for a month with no Appleby mention and he won, at triple figure odds, whilst shooting a 59 to boot!
I hope someone was on!
This week is another good chance for the players on the fringes of the world's top-50 to make a name for themselves without the bigger names in opposition and it was impossible not to be impressed with Charles Howell III last week as he got through all four rounds without even one bogey or worse. Two top 20s in as many appearances in this Championship mean he is a must have selection and I'm very suprised he's not favourite.
I've been really impressed with Bryce Molder during the past two seasons. He's only made one appearance at the Turning Stone and missed the cut but that was in 2007 and can surely be forgiven. He is out in one of the first three balls on Thursday and can build on his recent good form (which includes a tie for fourth at the Canadian Open last time out).
Gary Woodland is an American youngster that is on the radar because he drives the ball as far as Bubba! He qualified in style for this years US Open and has made three cuts from seven appearances on tour this year. He's capable of impressive birdie streaks and can tear courses apart with his length. It's a long-shot but in this field the price is right for a trade.
Dangers: Charley Hoffman can count himself as one of the stars in this field and has been eyecatching in spells during this season. John Senden's form reads well here and hasn't been out of contention in three appearances. Michael Sim is a favourite of mine and he will bounce back strongly at some point this year. He's missed his last two cuts but a week in contention here would not suprise one bit, and finally Chris Stroud looked like he was coming back to form last week also.
Bubba Watch: Bubba's at Firestone this week, I've looked at the PGA players in that event here (http://betting.betfair.com/golf/golf-events/wgc-bridgestone-invitational-betting-the-pga-tours-040810.html)
Selections: Charles Howell III [25.0], Bryce Molder [32.0], Gary Woodland [650.0]
