Never mind the dodgy clobber, Rickie is in hot form...
"Fowler is the great American hope to challenge the current European domination..."
Dan Geraghty selects his trio of players to follow at Sea Island this week, including one young American who triumphed at the Georgia course as a junior...
In recent weeks three players I was all over in this column last fall season have won. Kevin Na, Bryce Molder and Rickie Fowler were all long overdue victories and I am keen to keep two of them onside for the remainder of the season. Both are out playing again this week.
It wasn't a PGA Tour event but Rickie Fowler [21.0] finally got the monkey off his back last week in Korea and I think he can silence the doubters once more by adding a PGA Tour title this week. Rickie absolutely dominated the (admittedly poor quality) field in Korea, winning wire to wire and finishing six shots clear of Rory McIlroy (who was second). Only seven players were under par for the four days. The leaderboard can be found here.
Woods is on the way back, slowly, but Fowler is the great American hope to challenge the current European domination at the top of the world rankings. I think last week's win will be the first of many and while he is clearly in such fine form, this end of season event provides a fantastic opportunity for two in a row. At Sea Island in 2006, Fowler opened with seven straight birdies to beat Peter Uhlein in the semi-finals of the American Junior Golf Associations Polo Golf Junior Classic and he regards the course among his favourites. He is the man to beat this week.
Bud Cauley [50.0] is another young American in form. He put up a strong challenge last weekend to finish third, that was his fifth top 25 finish of the season (from just eight events) and he also had a hole in one in practice at Sea Island on Wednesday.
The Punter makes a good argument for backing Chris Kirk [65.0] this week. I am a big fan of Kirk, who had a piece of exciting news this week; his wife is due to give birth to their first child in March. With lots of positives pointing towards a strong showing this week perhaps the (in)famous golf nappy factor will kick in early.
Dangers: Bryce Molder [40.0] was very impressive on Sunday, so much so that it's hard to believe someone whose wedge game and putting is so good has only just notched his first win. He went after the win on Sunday rather than waiting for it to happen and perhaps now we will see a different Molder when in contention. Davis Love III [120.0] is hosting this week's tournament and, like the Punter, I think he'll put up a good showing.
