Will Mallinger be in the mix come Sunday afternoon?
"Mallinger's form here is patchy but he was third in 2008 and seems to be performing at the peak of his powers right now... "
Dan Geraghty selects a promising trio of players who could be in contention this weekend and outlines some dangers too...
Hats off to Bill Haas. This is the remarkable shot that made his FedEx Cup win possible. Bill has pulled out this week and will no doubt be spending the time deciding how to spend his new found wealth. However, the show must go on and there are plenty of golfers playing for their livelihood this fall season.
Ryan Moore [16.5] is one of the star attractions this week. His form here has steadily improved since 2006, culminating in a seventh-placed finish in 2009. He missed the event last year (after playing in the Tour Championship) but can be expected to pick up where he left off two years ago. Despite not having won in that time, Moore's form has been good and he can count himself unlucky to have missed out on this season's Tour Championship, finishing just seven places outside the cut off. However, that hopefully means he will be well rested and eager to get going.
The most in-form man in the field is arguably John Mallinger [50.0]. His form figures for his last six outings read 9/12/3/2/2/6. Granted, five of those are on the lesser, Nationwide Tour and none of them are an actual win, but it's impressive nonetheless. Mallinger's form here is patchy but he was third in 2008 and seems to be performing at the peak of his powers right now, which has earned him inclusion in Paul Krishnamurty's Five to Follow article. In a weak field he's worth chancing at a nice price but have your finger hovering over the lay button late on Sunday.
Cameron Tringale [70.0] is a player I've been keen to follow and this week seems like the perfect opportunity. Tringale made his first appearance here last year, opening with a first round 64 before finishing 11th. That turned out to be his (joint) best finish of the year and he has built on that promise this season, having finished in the top 10 four times to date.
Dangers: Nick Watney [12.5] stands out like a sore thumb in this field; he's not been in good form but is obviously worth monitoring very closely in this company. Michael Sim [350.0] has had a horrible year, this is his first tournament for a while and, while it's hard to recommend him as a danger, he's certainly one to keep an eye on for any signs of life. And finally, out of form duo Ben Crane [70.0] and Brian Gay [80.0] are tempting prices.
