The field is weak but Dan Geraghty is strong on these selections...
Last week's tournament turned out to be as uncompetitive as expected - Tiger won by a single shot but was never truly troubled. This week the PGA Tour is faced with an exodus of its stars as most of the elite head for Europe to prepare for next week's Open Championship.
The lack of stars at the John Deere Classic offers a great opportunity to some of the players who have been out of the limelight in recent times and while some players minds will already be turning to Turnberry, you can be sure David Toms will have his mind firmly on getting back into the winners' enclosure.
Toms has been offered up in this column a couple of times in recent months and following his excellent second place behind Kenny Perry two weeks ago I am willing to give him another chance at a tournament he won in 1997. Yes, Toms again has to overcome Perry (last year's winner) but I believe he is up to the task. The 42-year-old didn't fall away tamely at the Travelers Championship and it was only the fact that Perry holed everything he looked at that stopped him claiming his first win of the season. The two are paired together for the first two days, expect Toms to gain his revenge.
Brandt Snedeker's season has yet to get going. He's been out with a rib injury and has struggled for form. Snedeker posted his first top five of the season last week to secure a place at Turnberry. This is his fifth week in a row on tour but there should be plenty left in the tank.
I followed Jason Day's scores on Shot Tracker during the first round of last weeks AT&T National and I could barely believe what I was reading.
Day shot a 78 and on the front nine he had a birdie putt inside 15 feet on most holes. He didn't hole a thing and three putted more than one of them from no distance at all. Amazingly he went the entire round without a birdie. Day appears to be playing beautifully tee to green and despite the inevitable missed cut his second round 68 was a much more encouraging score. I'm confident he is overpriced here and with a bit of luck early on he'll find himself competing at the business end of this tourrnament
Selections: David Toms ([18.0]), Brandt Snedeker ([70.0]), Jason Day ([85.0])
