Get on Herron but don't make it a Lumpy bet, says Paul Krishnamurty as our expert goes in search of another three-figure winner.
It's nearly three years since Tim 'Lumpy' Herron won the last of his four PGA Tour titles, but at the huge odds of [310.0], the big man looks worth a few pennies to end the drought this week at Pebble Beach.
Herron knows these courses well, having participated in every renewal of this event bar one since 1996. And he has enjoyed his fair share of success in this pro-am, making four top-20s and registering a personal best of third back in 2003.
Conditions should favour him more than usual this year, as heavy rain is forecast for the whole week. This should place a greater emphasis on driving distance, where he scores highly, and soft greens should turn the tournament into a real target golf affair, which again suits his style. Furthermore, he has a better record than most in the rain.
We have to overlook missed cuts on his last two starts, but that may be the reason for these huge odds. For on his form prior to that, Lumpy would deserve serious consideration. Three of his last six starts in 2008 yielded top-eight finishes, and he started 2009 well enough with three sub-70 rounds and 12th place in the Sony Open.
