Nationwide Tour graduate is a big hitter and that will suit at the Zurich Classic says Paul Krishnamurty.
It's less than two months since I last tipped Scott Piercy in this column, but seeing as he gave us a good run for our money in fifth place on that occasion, I reckon he deserves another chance in what would appear ideal conditions at this week's Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
Along with sixth place at the FBR Open - which could have been so much better as he held a five shot lead at one stage, trading around [2.2] - those are Piercy's best efforts since graduating from the Nationwide Tour. However, even when he hasn't been right up near the top of the leaderboard, he's still taken the eye. Take his penultimate start in the Shell Houston Open. Piercy was nicely positioned after three rounds, before a disastrous final day 80 sent him spiralling down to 42nd place. And even including that disappointing result, he's still made the top-20 in half of his PGA Tour starts this season.
I remain of the view that Piercy is the likeliest of the Nationwide Tour graduates to open his account at the higher level, and while he's available at around [140.0] he's certainly worth a speculative trade. He regularly ranks amongst the longest drivers, and this Louisiana track bodes well in that regard. Since the course was rebuilt after Hurricane Katrina, both winners have been massive hitters - Andres Romero and Nick Watney.
