"When he does find circumstances to his liking, Sabbatini can be world-class as illustrated by an impressive tally of five PGA Tour titles."
South African is hugely erratic but he's also a winner and at [300.0] on Betfair that makes punting sense.
If you're going to oppose Tiger Woods at this week's Deutsche Bank Championship, you may as well pick a rank outsider, especially given recent trends. After all, when Woods has been beaten recently, it hasn't been by his most obvious rivals. Rather, the only two players to have bettered Woods in the States since June were pre-tournament [500.0] chances Y E Yang and Heath Slocum. My pick of this week's outsiders is Rory Sabbatini at [300.0].
The key point to remember about Sabbatini is that he is unlikely to ever be consistent. The naturalised South African is known for his fiery temperament and impatience on the course, and that usually means failure at most tough championship venues. However, when he does find circumstances to his liking, Sabbatini can be world-class as illustrated by an impressive tally of five PGA Tour titles.
The latest of those came as recently as May, when Sabbatini won the Byron Nelson Championship, and he also finished second a month earlier in New Orleans. His eight efforts since that last win have all been disappointing, though at least half were on courses where I'd never expect Sabbatini to be a factor. In contrast, we know from his sixth place at TPC Boston in 2007 that this week's course does play to his strengths, so it would be no surprise to see this erratic character bounce right back to form.
