Rocco Mediate's accuracy could carry him to a win at a huge price
"Rather than power, tee-to-green accuracy appears to be the key skill this week, and [220.0] chance Mediate is very reliable in that respect."
A famous US Open runner-up could oblige this week at enormous odds, says Paul Krishnamurty
Despite last week's opening Fall Series event being won by the joint favourite, the wider leaderboard offered some vindication of my theory that the best value at this time of year lies with those players currently outside the top-125 on the PGA Tour money list. Of the five players identified last week as men to follow during the Fall Series, four played at Annandale, with two making the top-ten; Jonathan Byrd and Brett Wetterich. The latter was a huge price pre-tournament, and is again available at around [130.0] for this week's McGladrey Classic.
This week's best pick is an even bigger outsider, even further down the money list, in 180th place. It is only two years since Rocco Mediate took Tiger Woods to the 19th hole of a US Open play-off, and while there is little to recommend him on 2010 form, recent weeks have seen an improvement. Mediate has made the top-25 on three of his last seven starts, and topped the greens in regulation stats at Annandale over the weekend. There is no better stat for measuring a player's wellbeing than GIR.
Ranking 168th in driving distance, clearly there are many courses that aren't going to suit the 47-year-old Mediate these days. Sea Island, which hosts this inaugural McGladrey Classic, looks perfectly suitable however, as a par-70 measuring just over 7,000 yards. Rather than power, tee-to-green accuracy appears to be the key skill this week, and [220.0] chance Mediate is very reliable in that respect.
