Paul Krishnamurty is sweet on the chances of Kane at a big price as the search continues for a three figure winner
Over the last decade, we've seen an unprecedented flurry of talent emerge from Australia. Yet throughout all the deserved attention lavished on Scott, Ogilvy, Baddeley and the rest, one promising Aussie who completely escaped my attention until this year was Kane Webber. The reason is that Webber has been US-based for most of the last decade, earning a promising reputation playing college golf and then the minor tours.
Since he's become an Asian Tour regular, Webber's profile has continued to rise. He's already won an event in Macau, but its been a series of good showings in the stronger co-sanctioned tournaments that have really taken the eye. He made the top-20 in the Johnnie Walker Championship, finished third in the Malaysian Open and then ninth in the new Korean event, all amongst similar fields to this week's opposition in China.
His odds of [120.0] seem an over-reaction to a missed cut last week in very tough conditions, an effort I'm happy to overlook at the price. Given that Webber made the top-10 on his sole appearance at the Shanghai venue last year, I'm sure he'll be confident of getting into contention once again.
Also, I must give a quick word for a player who ran well for this column at a big price a few months ago. Peter Whiteford played some excellent tee-to-green golf at the weekend to finish eighth in the China Open. At odds of [200.0] he could be worth a small trade in China.
