John Mallinger in action
"I backed Mallinger at a huge price for this last year, and as he went well for a long way, odds of [120.0] look pretty reasonable value. On the face of it, 25th place sounds pretty ordinary but Mallinger had a couple of disaster holes and otherwise would have held at least a chance of a place."
American is improving fast and has the goods to shoot a very low total at the Bob Hope Classic
With very low scoring a certainty at the Bob Hope Classic, the most essential requirement in order to contend is a hot putter, and that must give John Mallinger a decent chance of landing his maiden PGA Tour title.
I backed Mallinger at a huge price for this last year, and as he went well for a long way, odds of [120.0] look pretty reasonable value. On the face of it, 25th place sounds pretty ordinary but Mallinger had a couple of disaster holes and otherwise would have held at least a chance of a place.
As the year went on, Mallinger put in several strong performances, including sometimes against stronger company than this week's opposition. The field for the Houston Open is always packed with stars fine-tuning their games ahead of the Masters, so sixth place there reads impressively. Even better was third place in the 'Fifth Major' at Sawgrass.
The closest Mallinger came to breaking his PGA Tour duck came when losing a play-off for the US Bank Championship. His tally on that occasion was -21, suggesting when that first win does arrive it will be as a result of a birdie-fest. This week's event is infamous in that regard, with only one winner this century registering a total worse than -25.
