"Donaldson has been in the best form of his career this summer. Four of his last six starts have yielded top-20 finishes, including three top-6s."
Because of the distinct conditions in Scotland, the number of potential winners in this week's Alfred Dunhill Links Championship is shorter than usual, and that must make Jamie Donaldson a cracking trade, writes Paul Krishnamurty.
Most of this field are expected to struggle either because they lack the expertise in links golf, the temperament for pro-ams, or the ability to cope with the forecast bad weather. Donaldson is one of the few who has no worries on any of those fronts and, moreover, has been in the best form of his career this summer. Four of his last six starts have yielded top-20 finishes, including three top-6s.
It must bode particularly well, therefore, that Donaldson has thrived in this tournament before, when in nowhere near the form shown in 2009. He made the top-10 last year, when he would have been trading closer to the [500.0] mark than this year's [110.0]. Even more interestingly, very early in his career the Welshman made the top-10 in the inaugural Dunhill Links back in 2001, when the tournament was plagued with wind and rain as expected this weekend.
