Gareth Maybin had a highly impressive rookie year
"Maybin strikes me as one of the likeliest first-time winners this year now he has that experience under his belt, and is certainly worth a small punt whenever available at these type of odds."
Up-and-coming talent is a huge price to win the Qatar Masters but last year's performances suggest a maiden victory is not far off
Having done everything but win during a fine rookie season, Gareth Maybin must be worth a second look when available at around this week's massive odds of [240.0].
Hotly tipped after some stellar performances on the Challenge Tour, Maybin made an immediate impression at this higher level when losing a play-off for the South African Open 13 months ago. That was the first of seven top-10s, an excellent return for a rookie. Moreover, those figures would look much better if he hadn't let himself down during several final rounds. Besides that play-off defeat, Maybin held at least three very good winning opportunities last season.
The Northern Irishman strikes me as one of the likeliest first-time winners this year now he has that experience under his belt, and is certainly worth a small punt whenever available at these type of odds. I suspect that quote is an over-reaction to a missed cut on last week's seasonal debut, which is easy to ignore given that he finished a close fourth at Leopard Creek just five weeks ago.
